Glasgow airport is sited 8 miles west of Glasgow City centre and is just off the M8 motorway close to the towns of Paisley and Renfrew and is the second largest airport in Scotland falling behind Edinburgh airport only in the last few years, in terms of passenger numbers.
At this time 8 million passengers travel through the airport each year with Edinburgh now over 9 million for the year ending 2008. Glasgow airport does have the advantage of operating two runways and in theory should be able to increase the number of destinations to travel to but clearly at the moment travellers seem to favour Edinburgh airport.
After the findings of the Competition Commission in March 2009, BAA which operates both Glasgow and Edinburgh airports, has been instructed to sell one of the airports and it will be intriguing to see which airport it puts up for sale. This should be to the advantage of the airlines flying out of Scotland, retailers and most of all the travelling public who for the first time will have a real choice. This should result in better value for Glasgow on airport parking. However, there are cheaper Glasgow airport parking alternatives available by leaving your car at one of the many off airport car parks. Most of these car parks are all situated to the airport with free transfers to the airport included in the price and represent excellent value.
Another option open to holidaymakers flying from the airport is to book one of the Glasgow Airport Hotels. This normally works in one of the following ways. You simply drive to the hotel and your car is parked in a secure Glasgow airport car park compound and you are transferred to the airport or after the night of your stay you drive to a secure car park where you are taken to the terminal.
