Jack Vettriano is one of the United Kingdoms most liked painters, with a public connection unsurpassed by other artists that are presently painting. The problem is that the most common of breeds the UK’s critic, doesn’t like what he paints.

This isn’t to say that Jack Vettriano isn’t a fantastic artist who captures moments that the public relate to and love, Or that Jack Vettriano prints don’t have a massive fan base across the globe with to date more than 500,000 posters of his work being sold worldwide.

The fact that in April 2004 one of Jack Vettriano’s pictures was sold for just shy of 750,000 pounds at Sotheby’s and that Jack Vettriano received an OBE for his work provided to the arts. Seems a bit strange that someone that produces this kind of work has been ignored by several British National Arts Collections and Museums.

Jack Vettriano came into the world in 1951 in Fife, Scotland, he eventually left school at the age of 16 to start working as mining engineer at the coal fields close to where he had his home. A girlfriend gave him a set of watercolour paints for his 21st Birthday which he then began teaching himself to use (it seems obvious that a person that teaches themselves how to do something is straight away going to have a difficult time from academia, elitists and art snobs alike).

At the point he felt ready Jack Vettriano decided to put in|submit} two of his canvases to the Royal Scottish Academy annual show in 1988 and they were quickly bought on the 1st day. Jack Vettriano was then approached by a number of galleries that asked to sell his work and his success has gradually blossomed from these humble beginnings.

In 2004 “The Singing Butler” finally silenced the critics even if only for a short time with its purchase at Sotheby’s. It seems fairly ridiculous that somebody that is obviously well liked by the population at large should constantly be fighting people that are unable to fit him into a box or tick their self imposed guidelines for what’s good and what’s not. If Shakespeare hadn’t been popular do you actually think he would a/ have got any work or b/ still be influencing our everyday.

Unfortunately for us the individuals that purchase for “our” public art collections are exactly the sort of people that I have been highlighting and to this point in time I am unaware of Jack Vettriano’s work showing in any of Scotland’s national galleries. Jack Vettriano is an accomplished artist that despite the ignorance of the art world at large is producing work that not only has depth of character but also a life that makes sure his popularity with individuals that see beauty as real instead of some formula known only to an elite (so called) few.

May is planting time in the west. Seeds of hardy vegetables and flowers are already planted. Seeds of more tender kinds should not be sown until the danger of late spring frosts is past. Treatment of seeds will reduce losses from seedling diseases.

Vegetable transplants may be set in the garden according to their ability to resist frost. Early cabbage, broccoli, head lettuce and onions can go in even before the frost season is over. Transplanting of celery, cauliflower and main crop cabbage can be delayed for a couple of weeks or so after killing frosts end. Plantings of tomatoes. eggplants, and peppers should be delayed until all danger of frost is past.

Weak fertilizer solutions (starter solutions) help to give plants a stimulus at transplanting time.

Growing Glad

Generally, glads can be planted at the time trees are leafing out. Subsequent plantings can be made to provide a succession of bloom, A succession can also be had if different size corms of a variety are planted and if different varieties are chosen to bloom at different periods. Make sure the late blooming varieties chosen will bloom before frost threatens in the fall. Glad corms can be saved over from year to year if proper storage facilities are available. If new corms are purchased, buy good quality, disease-free ones from a reliable source.

Dipping the corms in corrosive sublimate, Lysol, or other disinfectant is recommended prior to planting. This is actually considered as an essential step to any vegetable garden planning that includes planting of glads.Use one ounce of corrosive sublimate per six gallons of water and soak the corms for 12 hours. Use Lysol at the rate of 3 1/2 tablespoons Lysol per three gallons water. Soak corms for three hours in this Lysol solution. These clips are useful in killing thrips as well as reducing injury from certain corm and soil borne diseases. Growing the All-America selections of gladiolus varieties is a good way of getting started in the newer, not too expensive introductions.

Plant gladiolus corms from four to six inches deep for the larger corms. Smaller corms may be planted shallower according to size. As a general rule, the heavier the soil, the shallower the corms should be planted. Cormels or bulblets can be planted fairly close together about one-half to one inch apart in the row, and in rows from 18 to 24 inches apart. If started in a frame, the between the row spacing can be reduced. True gladiolus seeds can be handled in much the same way as cormels. Allow the plants from cormels and seeds to grow as vigorously as possible throughout the season. Give them plenty of water.
