Dugald Drummond designed the successful T9 Class 4-4-0 locomotives, using the experience he gained from the less than perfect C8 Class, and by incorporating large fireboxes and Stephenson link valve gear.

The first fifty were confidently ordered straight from the drawing board and constructed between 1899 and 1900. Twenty were built at the London & South Western Railway’s own workshop at Nine Elms in London and thirty were built by Dübs & Company in Glasgow, all supplied with six-wheel tenders.

In all a total of 66 T9s were built, of which 15 were further outshopped from the Nine Elms workshop between 1900 and 1901. These locos incorporated some modifications which included a wider cab, revised wheel splashers and the fitting of cross-water tubes inside the firebox, along with the connection of the Drummond ‘watercart’ eight – wheel tender for longer running. The previous batches were later retrofitted with the modifications.

The 66th and final T9 was built by Dübs & Co, in 1901 for the Glasgow Exhibition of that year.

Built specifically for the highly competitive express train services from Plymouth to London, they quickly came into their own, with their high turn of speed soon earning them the nickname of the ‘Greyhounds’. Their comparatively short frames and light axle weight suited the tighter curves of lines on the West Country routes.

Robert Urie, successor to Dugald Drummond, continued to make further modifications and improvements until 1929.

After initial service with the London & South Western Railway, they passed to the Southern Railway when the railways were regrouped in 1923 and in 1948 they passed to the newly formed British Railways.

In 1949, 13 of the T9s were converted to ‘oil burning’ the experiment was not a success and all 13 were withdrawn from service.

The remaining T9s were finally withdrawn from service in 1961. All but one were scrapped.

With the new range of Hornby T9 Class 4-4-0, modellers can experience for themselves the charm of this much loved locomotive. In fact, the first variants released earlier this year sold out almost immediately. Using new tooling, the detailing on these new locomotives is nothing short of exceptional. I swear that you can even read the sight gauges in the cab! Check out the 360 degree images of the Hornby R2712X T9 Class and the Hornby R2713X T9 Class at www.trainsnrailways.co.uk and hopefully you will see for yourself how wonderful this little locomotive is.

I don’t believe I must tell anyone this economy is tricky and many people have been having a fairly tough time. I lost my work about four months ago when the company where I was employed closed down two of their production lines and my bro in law, Barney got his pink slip last month when his office commented that they were closing the doors completely.

Both of us spent a fair period of time and effort looking for new jobs but with no success. However, we were clear on the fact that we still needed revenue to pay our bills and support our families so Barney and I determined to go into business for ourselves.

We had no clear idea on what this operation would be as my only real talent and experience was in producing washing machines and Barney had worked as a quality controls inspector at a candy company. However, my young neighbor convinced us that rap music, rappers and that hip hop lifestyle was the hottest growth trend in our culture today. Now I must admit that both Barney and I agree the entire’rapper scene’ is just plain foolish but if it makes cash then who are we to argue.

Somehow we made a decision to go after the jewellery segment of the hip hop market with the plan that we could start off rather small and just offer our merchandise for sale at flea markets until we could afford to open a regular store. So, our next task was to find a wholesale bling bling outlet.

We quickly discovered that we had a serious problem in that we used to be a new business with no track record and no credit report which suggested that nobody would sell us any inventory except for cash. They were all extraordinarily polite to assure us that credit terms would be possible after we were established but it was all going to be COD at the beginning. We started scrambling then to find cash loans.

Well, we ultimately got our money together. Not especially as much as we wanted but enough to at least buy some starter inventory and get the project rolling and we had also found some promising wholesale outlets that we thought we could deal comfortably with. However, none of these wholesale sellers was in out town so we were going to want to go which meant making airline and hotel reservations.

Getting the airline reservations was very easy and most of the hotels now subscribe to some type of online booking engine that made dealing with them also pretty simple.

Obedience training is one of the most important aspects of having a dog.  When I say training I mean more than just house training your puppy. In fact, if you love your dog and you love being a dog owner, both you and your dog will be happier, easier to live with and get along with, and even safer than if you fail to train your dog.

A well-trained dog is a pleasure to own.  A well-trained dog requires fewer restrictions and a well-trained dog does not create embarrassment and will always reflect well upon his or her owner.

Just to cite a few examples, a well trained dog will not frighten or annoy the visitors to your home with excessive barking, inappropriate jumping or other annoying habits.  Also, a dog that is leash-trained and will heel nicely at his owner’s side and will do a sit command without hesitation is much more welcome in a public place among other people and pets than a rowdy and out-of-control.  The bottom line is that the more reliable and trustworthy your dog is, the more of a pleasure he is to own.  Also, a well-trained dog receives much more positive attention and interaction from other people, be they family members, friends or even people you have never met before.  Nobody enjoys an unruly and ill-mannered dog but a well-trained and obedient dog can melt many hearts.

You are your dog’s leader.  You are the alpha dog.  It is your responsibility to turn your puppy into a well-mannered adult dog.  Training also strengthens the bond between a dog and his or her owner.  It builds mutual respect, communication, understanding and makes it clear to your do that you are the leader of the pack, or what is commonly referred to as the “alpha dog”, if your dog does not respect you as the leader, both of you will encounter problems, especially if your dog is a bit more high strung and rowdy by nature.

A well-trained dog that responds quickly and efficiently to voice commands is also a much safer dog.  Imagine if your dog slipped out of his collar in the middle of a busy intersection, if you can safely heel him back across the street and then have him sit and put his collar back on, many tragedies could be avoided.  Also, if the gate is inadvertently left open and your dog leaves the yard, if he is trained to follow your commands you can quickly bring him back home, saving you time, energy and frustration.

Many of the dogs that end up in shelters do so because of a lack of training by their owners.  It is the owner’s responsibility to train the dog to conform to the family’s rules and to be a good “dog citizen”.  A well-trained dog is also easier to adopt into another family, thereby saving the dog from an untimely end.  Far fewer dogs would end up in shelters if the owners took obedience training seriously. A well-loved and well-trained dog is a pleasure to own.  A rowdy and out of control dog is a hardship to own but it is not the dog who is responsible for that.  It is always the owner.

A well-behaved and properly trained dog is a pleasure to own.  Your dog will be able to go anywhere and do anything without being a nuisance or annoyance to you or to others.
